Drone services in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: nuclear sites, chemical industry, dams and mountains, 2026 prices
France's second-largest regional economy, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes also has one of the country's highest densities of sensitive infrastructure for a professional remote pilot: four nuclear plants off-limits to overflight, a chemical valley packed in just south of Lyon, nineteen hydroelectric developments run by the Compagnie Nationale du Rhône, and an alpine range that will host the 2030 Winter Olympics. Between Lyon, Grenoble, Clermont-Ferrand and Chambéry, missions range from regulated industrial inspection to snow mapping in high mountain terrain, alongside steep-slope viticulture in Beaujolais and the northern Côtes-du-Rhône. The region's airspace: four nuclear plants and demanding terrain
Lyon-Saint-Exupéry is France's second airport by traffic, well ahead of Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne, Chambéry-Savoie Mont Blanc or Grenoble-Isère, which nonetheless remain points of attention for any mission near their control zone; the protocol required in that case is detailed in our guide to drone missions inside an airport CTR. But the region's most defining constraint is not airport-related, it is nuclear: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes hosts four of France's eighteen nuclear plants, each protected by a permanent no-fly zone active around the clock, on the principle detailed in our guide to drones and nuclear power plants. The Bugey plant, in the Ain department 35 km from Lyon, runs four 900 MWe reactors in service since 1978-1979; Cruas-Meysse, in Ardèche, four 900 MWe reactors since 1984-1985; Saint-Alban, in Isère, sits 50 km downstream from Lyon on the banks of the Rhône; the Tricastin plant, in the Drôme, sits at the tripoint of three regions (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Occitanie, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur) and alone employs 1,500 staff. This is not theoretical: in 2017, a Greenpeace drone disguised as a superhero deliberately crashed into the spent fuel pool building at Bugey, triggering an immediate response and wide media coverage.

The chemical valley and heavy industry: ICPE missions
South of Lyon, the chemical valley forms a dense industrial corridor with no equivalent elsewhere in the region: around 100,000 inhabitants and 50,000 jobs spread across a handful of communes, including Feyzin, Pierre-Bénite and Saint-Fons. The commune of Feyzin alone hosts two high-threshold Seveso establishments: Total's oil site and the Rhône Gaz site. More broadly, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes counts around 5,000 installations classified for environmental protection, of which 3,600 require authorisation and 110 are high-threshold Seveso sites — 26 of them within the Lyon Metropolis alone. This density makes the region one of France's richest for regulated inspection missions: roof and tank thermography, cladding checks, flare or storage-tank monitoring. Access to this type of site is never automatic: each operator imposes its own prevention plan, often stricter than the aviation framework itself, and coordination with the site's HSE department systematically precedes filing the flight plan.
Nineteen developments on the Rhône: missions for the CNR
The Rhône's sole concession holder since 1934, the Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR) designed, built and has operated nineteen hydroelectric developments between 1933 and 1987 — each combining a dam, a power plant, a lock and levees. Fourteen of them sit in the Rhône-Alpes part of the region: from upstream to downstream, Génissiat-Seyssel (a high-head dam), Chautagne, Belley, Brégnier-Cordon, Sault-Brénaz, Pierre-Bénite, Vaugris and Péage-de-Roussillon among others. These structures, in service for decades and permanently exposed to flowing water, age with pathologies of their own: corrosion of metal superstructures, cracking of the road decks that often span the dams, erosion of the rockfill at the structure's base. A study by Shuowen Zhao, Fei Kang, Junjie Li and Chuangyong Ma, published in 2021 in the journal Automation in Construction, tested precisely this approach: by reconstructing a 3D model of a dam from drone-captured images, the authors show the method detects cracks and deformation with enough fidelity for regular structural monitoring, at a cost and frequency well below conventional inspection campaigns (see the study on Google Scholar). The 2030 Winter Olympics, ski resorts and steep-slope vineyards: mountain missions
The French Alps 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will run from 1 to 17 February, followed by the Winter Paralympics from 1 to 10 March. Most snow-sport venues sit in Savoie and Haute-Savoie: the La Plagne bobsleigh track, the Courchevel ski jump and the Roc de Fer giant slalom course at Méribel, three facilities inherited from the 1992 Albertville Games, joined by new venues at La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand. Beyond the Olympic deadline, mapping snow cover remains a recurring mountain mission for ski resorts and avalanche-prevention services. A study by Michael Adams, Yves Bühler and Reinhard Fromm, published in 2018 in Pure and Applied Geophysics, assessed the multitemporal accuracy of drone photogrammetry for mapping snow depth at the scale of an alpine slope: the measured standard deviation ranges between 10 and 15 cm depending on conditions, precise enough to objectify an uneven snowpack where the eye only sees a uniformly white slope (see the study on Google Scholar). Method, flight framework and prices
A mission in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes follows the usual outline, with a heavier zone check than elsewhere: site analysis first, with particular care around proximity to a nuclear plant, a Seveso site, an airport CTR or the military sector over the Chaîne des Puys — the Géoportail restriction map must be checked at the site's exact address, never at the scale of the commune. Choosing the regulatory framework next: the open category for most rural, agricultural or isolated mountain missions, the specific category for industrial estates, dense urban areas (Lyon, Grenoble, Saint-Étienne) or flights near classified infrastructure. Coordination finally: written agreement from the industrial operator or the CNR, notice to the relevant mountain resort, and planning around the alpine wind regime.

Two pricing tips. Give the exact address of the site from the very first enquiry rather than just a commune: the region's density of no-fly zones means the same commune can shift from a standard framework to a strictly forbidden zone within a few hundred metres. Can a drone fly over the Bugey, Cruas-Meysse, Saint-Alban or Tricastin nuclear plants?
No, never for civilian use. Each of the region's four plants is protected by a permanent no-fly zone active around the clock, established by order on the same principle as every French nuclear site. No exemption is granted to a professional drone operator; an unauthorised overflight triggers criminal prosecution and an immediate response, as shown when a Greenpeace drone crashed into the spent fuel pool building at Bugey in 2017.
Does a mission in the chemical valley south of Lyon need a special authorisation?
Yes, on top of the standard flight framework. The chemical valley is home to several high-threshold Seveso sites, including two at Feyzin (Total, Rhône Gaz); any mission on or immediately near such a site requires the operator's prior agreement and compliance with its risk-prevention plan, on the same principle as any industrial ICPE inspection.
Is the UNESCO-listed Chaîne des Puys freely flyable?
No. The whole site sits inside a large red zone on the Géoportail UAS restriction map, reserved for low-altitude military training and activated on a schedule published in advance; local altitude caps of 30, 50, 60 or 100 metres apply depending on the sector, with some excluding any flight above 120 metres.
