Drone Work in Gironde (33): Bordeaux Vineyards, Gascony Forest, Arcachon Bay and Estuary

Gironde is the largest department in mainland France — some 10,725 km² — and one of the few where four heavy industries share the same sky : the country's leading appellation vineyard, the Gironde side of Western Europe's largest planted forest, an oyster-farming bay, and a 635 km² estuary lined with seven port terminals. For anyone commissioning drone work, the difficulty is therefore almost never finding a pilot : it is flying in the right week. Brush-clearance checks happen before growth resumes, frost mapping plays out over three April mornings, the fire season closes the airspace exactly when the vineyard needs a health survey, and the Arcachon foreshore only uncovers at spring tides. This departmental guide sets out, sector by sector, what a drone delivers in Gironde, what the Bordeaux-Mérignac control zone and the Mérignac military footprint impose over the metropolitan area, and how to build a flight calendar that actually holds.

A department the size of a region, with a control zone at its heart

Gironde is the largest department in mainland France : roughly 10,725 km², more than the whole Île-de-France region. That size explains much of the economics of a drone mission here : between a maritime pine plot south of Belin-Béliet, a Médoc estate, an oyster hut at Gujan-Mestras and a terminal at Le Verdon-sur-Mer, there are hours of driving. At the centre of the department, the Bordeaux conurbation sits under the Bordeaux-Mérignac aerodrome control zone, and the aerodrome itself is a mixed platform : Air Base 106 shares its runways with the civil airport. The total platform footprint is around 870 hectares, some 150 of them military — a perimeter that must not be overflown, as our guide to flying near military zones explains. In practice, a mission over Mérignac, Pessac, Talence, Bègles or the Pessac-Léognan vineyard is not prepared like one in the Blayais : it goes through the coordination described in our guide to missions inside an aerodrome control zone, with administrative lead time to build into the schedule and often an imposed time slot.

A heritage constraint is layered on top, and it is widely misunderstood. Bordeaux, Port of the Moon has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 28 June 2007 across 1,810 hectares, making it the largest urban ensemble on the List ; the Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion has been inscribed since December 1999, the first vineyard listed as a cultural landscape. Inscription does not ban flying, but it changes who you talk to : imagery of a protected building, filming on public land, consent from the monument's custodian. The Bordeaux vineyard after the uprooting: missions that are no longer only agronomic

The first fact to state is economic, not technical. Between 2023 and 2025, roughly 18,000 hectares of vines were uprooted in Gironde, and the 2025 claimed area fell below 90,000 hectares — a contraction of about 18 % in three years, figures presented to the Bordeaux Wine Council assembly in April 2025. The region remains France's leading appellation vineyard, but it is restructuring. For a contractor, that shifts demand : alongside classic agronomic work, a growing share of flights now concerns land and property — a record of condition before uprooting, evidence of a plot returned to crops or grassland, a site plan for an estate being sold, marketing imagery for a converted farm building.

The agronomic uses remain very concrete, and tightly bound to the calendar. Spring frost is mapped thermally over a handful of April mornings, to identify an estate's cold hollows and size its protection. Multispectral vigour mapping feeds input modulation, water-stress monitoring — now an annual subject in a vineyard where summers have hardened — and plot selection at harvest ; missing-vine counting puts figures on a replanting plan plot by plot. One point deserves careful wording, because it touches a statutory control programme : Flavescence dorée. Regulatory scouting remains human work, row by row, and no aerial image replaces it. Multispectral imagery can, however, help target the effort. The study by J. Albetis, S. Duthoit, F. Guttler, A. Jacquin and co-authors, published in 2017 in Remote Sensing, tested drone multispectral detection of Flavescence dorée and showed that a usable signal exists on red-berried varieties, while stressing how hard it is to separate the disease from other declines producing the same visual symptoms (see the study on Google Scholar). In other words : the drone ranks the areas to scout first, it does not diagnose. On the building side, the barrel hall is often an estate's real source of savings : a large roof, ageing insulation, rooftop refrigeration, and a thermal survey that reads in an hour of flying.

The Gironde side of the Gascony forest: what the summer of 2022 changed

The south and west of the department belong to the Landes de Gascogne massif, about one million hectares spanning Gironde, Landes and Lot-et-Garonne, dominated by maritime pine : Western Europe's largest planted forest. It is a commercial forest, with private owners, cooperatives, sawmills and paper mills downstream — and a fire risk that changed scale in 2022.

That summer's figures are worth restating precisely, because they explain today's demand. At La Teste-de-Buch, some 7,000 hectares burned, the fire only contained on 23 July. At Landiras, about 13,800 hectares in July — then a flare-up from 9 to 14 August over a further 7,400 hectares towards Belin-Béliet, Hostens and Saint-Magne. A fire at Saumos followed in September. In all, more than 30,000 hectares, the worst season since 1949. The technically decisive point is the nature of that flare-up : the study by L. Menut, A. Cholakian, G. Siour, R. Lapere and co-authors, published in 2023 in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, describes a fire apparently out at the surface yet still spreading underground through peat before re-emerging a month later, and also documents the lasting effect of lost leaf area on regional air quality (see the study on Google Scholar).

A fire smouldering below the surface is exactly what an airborne thermal camera finds, and that is the subject of our guide to post-wildfire hot-spot detection. Three lasting families of missions have settled around that event in Gironde : burn-severity mapping, which sorts what is dead from what will recover and drives the restoration plan ; plantation survival monitoring, which counts living seedlings over areas where walking the count costs more than the flight ; and smoke-detection patrols on high-risk days, outside any period when aircraft are committed.

The second lever is regulatory and concerns everyone, not just foresters. Statutory brush-clearance obligations were strengthened by law no. 2023-580 of 10 July 2023 and the interministerial order of 29 March 2024, then applied in Gironde by a prefectural order of 17 October 2025. It covers the whole department, within the zone made up of woods, forests and heathland over 0.5 hectare plus a 200-metre band around them : 50 metres around buildings, 6 metres either side of private access roads, 20 metres along public roads open to motor traffic. Finally, in a forest undergoing heavy ownership change, pre-acquisition due diligence on a woodland parcel — standing volume, health status, track access — has become a routine request.

Coast and Arcachon Bay: shoreline retreat, the Pilat dune, oyster foreshore

The Gironde coast is the department's most regulated ground for drone work, because measurement there has become a planning obligation. Article 239 of the Climate and Resilience Act of 22 August 2021 created a list of municipalities whose planning policy must adapt to shoreline retreat ; that list, set by decree no. 2022-750 of 29 April 2022 and extended by decree no. 2024-531 of 10 June 2024, now runs to 317 municipalities. Eight are in Gironde : Arcachon, Carcans, Lacanau, Lège-Cap-Ferret, Soulac-sur-Mer, La Teste-de-Buch, Vendays-Montalivet and Le Verdon-sur-Mer. Those municipalities must produce a map of exposure to retreat at two horizons : 0 to 30 years and 30 to 100 years, and embed it in their planning documents. Such a map cannot be built from a single aerial photograph : it requires a series of comparable surveys over time, which our guide to coastal erosion monitoring by photogrammetry describes.

The department's most telling landmark is the Pilat dune. Measured every spring by centimetre-grade differential GPS by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine coastal observatory, it peaked at 110.5 m in 2017, stood at 103.6 m in 2023 and 101 m in 2024, its lowest since annual surveys began in 2009 — while the dune toe retreats by about 4 m a year on the northern sector. It is the plainest reminder that the Gironde coast is a moving object whose recorded state expires within one storm season.

That the drone is the right tool for this monitoring is not a hypothesis : it is documented on this very coast. The study by Q. Laporte-Fauret, V. Marieu, B. Castelle, R. Michalet, S. Bujan and D. Rosebery, published in 2019 in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, covers the Truc Vert site in Gironde : four kilometres of shoreline — around one square kilometre of beach-dune system — surveyed in under two hours of flying, yielding a digital surface model at 0.1 m resolution with a root-mean-square vertical error of 0.05 m using permanent ground control points, allowing the survey to be repeated after every storm (see the study on Google Scholar). The permanent control-point set-up is the method's real secret : it is what makes surveys comparable from one year to the next.

Behind the dune, Arcachon Bay adds an economy and a set of constraints of its own. More than 300 oyster businesses work about 780 hectares of beds on the foreshore, and the whole is covered by the Arcachon Bay Marine Nature Park, created by decree no. 2014-588 of 5 June 2014 over roughly 435 km². The estuary, the port and the levees: 635 km² of assets to watch

The Gironde estuary, formed by the confluence of the Garonne and the Dordogne, covers around 635 km², 75 km long and up to 12 km wide : the largest estuary in Western Europe. That body of water underpins a discreet but heavy slice of the local economy, and an ageing stock of structures.

The Port of Bordeaux is not a single site but a string of seven terminals spread over more than a hundred kilometres, from Le Verdon-sur-Mer to Bordeaux via Pauillac, Blaye, Ambès, Parempuyre and Bassens. It handled 6.3 million tonnes in 2024, up 1.4 %, more than a third of it at Bassens — over 3.2 Mt a year. That dispersion is exactly what makes drones relevant : an operator cannot keep an inspection team on every site, and quays, dolphins, riprap, gantries and sheds are surveyed far faster from the air. The estuary is also lined by a long run of levees and reclaimed marshland — the estuarine Médoc, the Ambès peninsula, the Blaye and Bourg marshes — whose upkeep usually falls to a body holding the French flood-management competence. These earth structures degrade slowly and almost invisibly from the crest : burrows, localised settlement, erosion scars on the river side, woody vegetation that has no business on the embankment body. The Gironde calendar: the real scheduling constraint

This is where Gironde differs from other departments. Elsewhere, a mission is scheduled around the contractor's availability. Here, four industries impose narrow windows, and those windows overlap. This is the year as it actually gets planned.

A local weather constraint sits on top : on the ocean side, the sea breeze builds in the late morning and often makes the afternoon unusable for fine photogrammetry, while forty kilometres inland, in the Entre-deux-Mers, the day stays workable. Running a mission in Gironde: method, deliverables and 2026 prices (excl. VAT)

The sequence is always the same, and the order matters. Qualification first : exact address, purpose of the deliverable, real deadline — a brush-clearance check, a frost map and a levee orthophoto are not flown the same way. Airspace check next : inside the Bordeaux-Mérignac control zone or near the military footprint, allow coordination lead time ; within the built-up area, a prefecture filing ; on the coast and the bay, a conversation with the protected-area body. Site preparation last : access, take-off area, people present, written consent from the owner or concession holder. Then flight, processing, delivery. The rules cited here are those in force in August 2026 ; temporary restrictions are rechecked the day before, and during the fire season, the same morning.

Three limits are worth stating up front, because they prevent disappointing quotes. A drone cannot see under a closed canopy without a LiDAR sensor, which changes the budget for a mature-stand inventory. It does not diagnose a regulated disease or a structure's stability : it produces the material an engineer, a viticulture adviser or a sworn officer then uses. And it does not fly in strong wind, in sustained rain, or while emergency aircraft are committed : in Gironde, that means a summer mission must always carry a fallback date.

Frequently asked questions

Can a professional drone fly over Bordeaux and its peri-urban vineyards?

Yes, but not in the same way everywhere. Bordeaux and much of its metropolitan area sit inside the Bordeaux-Mérignac aerodrome control zone, on top of which lies the military footprint of Air Base 106, which shares its runways with the civil airport. Flying there requires prior coordination with the airspace manager, and overflying the military footprint itself is prohibited. Within the built-up area you also need a prefecture filing, a controlled take-off area and the site owner's written consent. The Graves and Pessac-Léognan vineyards, immediately south of the metropolitan area, often carry both constraints : controlled airspace and urban fabric. Conversely, a plot in the Médoc, the Entre-deux-Mers or the Libournais generally flies with no formality beyond checking temporary restrictions the day before.

Can a drone fly in the Gironde forest during the fire season?

Outside an active fire, yes — and that is precisely when detection patrols are worth most. During an active fire, no : civil-protection aircraft have absolute priority, a response area can be placed under a temporary airspace restriction, and Bordeaux-Mérignac hosts the very water-bomber reloading facility used by Canadair, Dash 8 and Air Tractor aircraft. A private drone flying nearby would suspend the drops. The operating rule is simple : in high-risk periods you fly at the request of a forest manager or a local authority, over a written perimeter, checking temporary restrictions on the day, and you land immediately as soon as an aircraft is committed in the sector.

Do you need special permission to fly over the Arcachon Bay oyster beds?

Three things stack up. First, the bay lies within a marine nature park created in 2014 : its management board gives an opinion on activities liable to affect the environment, and recurring low-level overflight is best prepared with it rather than against it, particularly during bird nesting and wintering periods. Second, the beds are public maritime domain concessions granted to named operators : you do not map someone else's asset without a written mandate, and an uncommissioned overflight raises a genuine trade-secret issue. Third, the hardest constraint is physical, not legal : the foreshore only uncovers at high-coefficient tides, which narrows the usable window to a few hours, a few days a month.
